Finally, we get USB storage on the Xbox!
Microsoft has announced that they will be releasing the console update on Xbox Live on April 6th. After updating your console, you’ll be able to use both external hard drives or USB flash drives to store your console’s data. However, the flash drives are probably better as they have better performance than spinning media.
According to Major Nelson (Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb), you can have two devices connected at the same time, which will give you up to 32Gb of extra storage, but any USB flash drives you connect have to be over 1Gb.
Unfortunately, they won’t be automatically configured when you plug them in, so you’ll have to go to the Memory Area of System Settings and do it manually. But hey, we’re getting USB storage, so who cares?
Apparently, Sandisk has partnered with Microsoft and are going to be releasing pre-configured Xbox 360 branded USB flash drives in May. So I guess we won’t have to do it all ourselves after all.
