To Slim Or Not To Slim?

by Dan Jordan

We’re still filing this one as a rumor at the moment

Although we have been hearing these rumors for a while about Microsoft appearing to be working on a combination microprocessor-graphics chip for the Xbox 360 as part of a move to create a slimmer game console.

Now some evidence has surfaced that the code-named Valhalla chip is done and a new model of the Xbox 360 with a redesigned motherboard (main circuit board) is near. A Chinese web site published photos of a motherboard with what appears to be a central processing unit (CPU)-graphics processing unit (GPU) chip. (via Kotaku)

Even if these images which have surfaced prove to be accurate this doesn’t mean that a launch is imminent. Months of testing could be ahead before a newly designed model can be introduced to the gaming market.

With Sony still struggling to match the demand for it’s slimmed down PS3 model launched last September, I can imagine that Microsoft must be debating how to access a slice of this incredibly profitable pie.

With it’s Xbox 360 taking the lead in the console marketplace during February 2010 it would seem to be an ideal time for Microsoft to consider releasing a ‘Slim’ version. If it was marketed at the same price as the current ‘Elite’ and with the heat issue fixed, I think that would go a fair way to rebuilding the confidence amongst a lot of gamers.

Although, opinions are divided on the forums, with one poster commenting…

Maybe they’re trying to save money on UPS collections by making it slim enough to post back to MS in an A4 envelope!? ;)

If a ‘Slim’ version of the Xbox 360 was marketed would you buy one?
